Available in Syth Black.
The jacket has great shape and doesn't look like you are wearing a garbage bag like some other brands. Pockets placement is logical and well thought out. Love the pit zips for thermal control. Jacket is warm when necessary but it lacks a liner so not cozy, which is what I wanted. My favorite part is the crinkle sound when you walk is minimal. Overall, this jacket was designed for active people who don't know how the weather will change over the course of a day, but the defiant hoodie has you covered.

Super technical "soft?" shell?
my main purpose was looking for a wear everywhere jacket for travel. In airports, between hotels, out for dinner. I live in sunny CA, so no need for extreme cold, maybe 45-50 deg min. But I did want ultra breathable since I run really warm and can't wear any jackets indoors. I used to wear a TNF GTX Pro shell. But that didn't breathe too well and provided almost zero warmth if needed. So I mainly packed it for rain.
I was trying to decide between this and the PDX Paladin. And noticed that the Paladin seemed to be for alot colder temps, and the Defiant seemed to brag about all the ultra breathable and temp regulating Schoeller fabrics. So I went Defiant, although I wish it did have the patch fields on the biceps, or at least the option.
I haven't travel tested it yet, but after wearing it around the house its perfect for what I needed it for. Lightweight, ultra breathable, wear anywhere. The hi-tech Schoeller fabrics and the top quality construction seem great as advertised. I hope this is a forever jacket.
Here's what I think the downsides are. Yes it is very slim. I'm normally a Large in outerwear. My TNF shell has always been a L with alot of room to spare. I'm 5'10" 210lbs. Not slim but also not too big. I bought an XL after reading other reviews and I 100% agree, the XL fits me a little loose with some room for maybe fleece layering. ALWAYS Size up on this jacket. But I still think its a little slimmer than my TNF large shell. And its cut short but not above my waist at my height, so not too short. If you are over 6' I can see this being too short.
The other thing that strikes me most is the thinness. I know I wanted it to be for relatively temperate temps but this is barely what I would classify as a softshell. I would say this is more of a hardshell with a thicker less crunchy outer fabric. If you are looking for the typical softshell with a jersey sweatshirt knit material this is way thinner than that. So don't expect any of the sweatshirt type warmth from this jacket.
As I said if you are looking for a super technical fabric hardshell that's less loud outer fabric and a little heavier than a hardshell this is the way to go. I might even say this is verging on not being a softshell.

Last Minute Buy for London then Ireland.
PDW underpromises and overdelivers. That’s my opinion. London wasn’t a solid test, but i was warm when i was meant to be and cool when I needed to be. Long walks in the Grosvenor area. Ireland however… the land of my people…well let me tell you, this Tipperary Viking is dry in “wind-informed” rain, meaning straight down, sideways, and all other delivery angles for rain are no match for this jacket. Irish weather…if you know, you know. Worth every penny. PDW might not have tested it here, but it is more than prepared for Tipperary, Clare, Galway, and the Aran Islands. Good job, PDW. After years of declining quality/stocking issues at TAD, you’ve earned the loyalty of this Irishman.

Extraordinary.
Really really really well thought-out jacket. Materials, pocket placement, hood shaping, all on point. No huge logos! Bicep pockets! If I had a gripe it would be the orange pull cords somewhat mess up the low-viz aesthetic, but otherwise PDW knocked it out of the park.

Schoeller 3XDRY®; Dry on the outside. Dry on the inside. Dry in a flash. 3XDRY® is a textile finishing technology that combines two functions into one textile.
Schoeller c_change®; Pine cones open when the outside temperature rises, and close again when the temperature drops. Inspired by nature, the c_change® membrane works on the same principle. It reacts in exactly the same way to ambient conditions. Not only the temperature but also the air and body moisture are taken into consideration.
Schoeller Cold Black®; heat absorption can be reduced to a minimum with coldblack®, the UVA- and UVB-protection textile finish from Schoeller Technologies. coldblack® reduces heat build-up and provides reliable protection from the sun’s rays. Consequently, the wear comfort of textiles can be noticeably improved.
