The almost mythical snow leopard (Panthera uncia syn. Uncia uncia) is a large cat native to the mountain ranges of Central and South Asia. With its distinctive white fur with black spots, the snow leopard is well adapted to and camouflaged in their natural habitat. It is known as "Ghost of the Mountains" by the local villagers that share their territory. As of 2003, the size of the global population was estimated at only 4,080–6,590 adults, of which fewer than 2,500 individuals may reproduce in the wild and is listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List. A portion of the proceeds from the sales of this patch will benefit the Snow Leopard Trust and their efforts in protecting this species. The Snow Leopard Trust builds community partnerships by using sound science to determine priorities for protecting the endangered snow leopard.
